2016 dealt us a number of heartbreaking celebrity break-ups, from the Brangelina split to the end of Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney’s engagement.

However, it seems none of them hit home quite like the news that Chris Pratt and Anna Faris are going their separate ways.

The couple, who have been married since 2009 and have a 4-year-old son together, announced their relationship was over in a joint statement in the early hours of Monday morning and no one really knows how to react to the news. It appears to have meant quite a bit to legions of complete strangers.

Prominent themes on social media: The introspective "I don't care about celebrity couples, but for some reason I cared about them," and the more bluntly fatalistic "Love is dead."

By the looks of things, a lot of people’s first reaction was heartbreak, particularly given that Chris and Anna had been one of the most relatable couples in Hollywood, with many Twitter users claiming they felt like giving up on romance altogether:
