Who would have thought that a series of fan-made mash-up videos featuring Spider-Man and Queen Elsa from Frozen would become a viral sensation resulting in billions of views on YouTube?

It might sound insane — because it kind of is — but YouTube creators like Toy Monster Compilations, Kids Try, and Brinoco each have millions of subscribers for their family-friendly videos about various Disney princesses and Marvel Superheroes interacting. Toy Monster Company didn’t start the trend, but their Webs & Tiaras series is the most popular. Their videos dominate search feeds, featuring the friendly Spider-Man and Elsa as a couple. They’re almost like silent films, scored to royalty-free stock music with primitive especial effects.

Gratuitous hand gestures and heightened facial expressions dominate the storytelling, providing a basic premise for some ridiculous and outlandish situations. In one video Spider-Man and Joker get in trouble for playing with fidget spinners at school, and in another Elsa makes a wish granted by the Genie from Aladdin to get the superpowers of the Avengers.

The genre has spun off many copycats, and it seems like everyone of them has their own version of the Joker getting caught cheating on a test at school.

The videos are pretty much harmless, meant to entertain kids, but they’re pretty creepy to watch — almost as if something sinister is about to take place at any given second. It’s also weird how many of them feature Elsa being pregnant or giving birth.

But they’re pretty light hearted and are meant to appeal to younger children who want to see videos of their toys, dolls, and action figures come to life. But those, of course, have inspired vulgar parodies taking advantage of the trend.

The internet is a weird place, but this is definitely one of the strangest things to come from it. Cue Principal Skinner saying, “It’s the children who are wrong.”
