COURT REJECTS ED SHEERAN COPYRIGHT CASE OVER "THINKING OUT LOUD"

Ed Sheeran has scored a major legal victory as the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear a copyright case accusing him of copying Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On in his hit Thinking Out Loud.

A minority owner of the Gaye track had pushed for years to sue Sheeran, but the High Court refused to revive the lawsuit. “No reasonable jury could find that the two songs… are substantially similar,” the judge stated, citing differences in melody and lyrics.

The case was previously dismissed in November, with the court ruling the songs only shared “fundamental musical building blocks.”

“We are gratified,” Sheeran’s lawyer told Rolling Stone, affirming the court’s support of the artist.

However, a separate case over a recorded version of Let’s Get It On may still proceed. Sheeran’s attorney dismissed the effort, calling it weak and “a continuation of a failed first case.”
