Lorde has candidly shared her struggle with an eating disorder and her evolving relationship with gender. In a new Rolling Stone interview, the 28-year-old New Zealand singer revealed that post-pandemic, she became consumed with calorie counting and protein monitoring during her Solar Power tour in 2022–2023.

Despite the tour’s highs, she recalled feeling "deep loathing" when viewing images of herself, even while living a dream on stage. “I don’t know how those two things can be true,” she said. Eventually, letting go of control over food and body image helped her reconnect with creativity.

Lorde also discussed gender, referencing lyrics from her upcoming album Virgin. She shared that while she identifies as a woman, "except for the days when I'm a man," she resists rigid definitions. Calling herself "in the middle gender-wise," Lorde embraces a fluid sense of self. Virgin is set for release on June 27.
