Virginia “Ginger” Hislop, 105, finally received her master’s degree in education from Stanford University, 83 years after completing her coursework. At the Graduate School of Education’s commencement on June 16, Hislop was cheered on by her family as she accepted her diploma from Dean Dan Schwartz. Hislop completed her bachelor's in education in 1940 and her master's coursework in 1941, but paused her thesis to marry George Hislop, who was called to serve in WWII. Despite not finishing her degree then, Hislop dedicated her life to education, serving on various educational boards in Yakima, Washington. She was inspired by her grandmother, a pre-Civil War educator, and her aunt, a school principal. Hislop’s efforts included founding Yakima Community College and serving 20 years on the Heritage University board. Receiving her degree, Hislop remarked, "I’ve waited a long time for this," expressing pride in her lifelong commitment to education.
