MTV News and CMT Archives Pulled Offline Amid Paramount Global's Financial Woes

MTV News, along with CMT’s archives, has been fully removed from the internet by Paramount Global, erasing over two decades of content. As of Monday, attempts to access MTV News articles redirect users to the main MTV website. The shutdown follows MTV News’ closure in 2023 due to Paramount's financial struggles. This removal includes extensive music journalism, notably the "Mixtape Monday" column, crucial for hip-hop history. Former MTV News staff expressed outrage over the loss on social media, with Patrick Hosken and Crystal Bell lamenting the erasure of years of work and pop culture history. The CMT website also saw its country-music archives disappear. Efforts to retrieve articles through internet archiving services like the Wayback Machine have proven unsuccessful. Paramount’s downsizing in May 2023 led to a 25% workforce reduction across Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks. MTV News originally launched in the late '80s with "The Week in Rock" hosted by Kurt Loder.
