Health Risks Cast Doubt on Human Missions to Mars

New research has cast doubt on the feasibility of human missions to Mars, revealing significant health risks posed by space travel. Studies conducted by scientists at University College London (UCL) have identified adverse effects on astronauts' bodies due to microgravity and galactic radiation. Kidneys, in particular, have shown signs of shrinkage after brief exposure to space conditions, raising concerns for long-duration missions.

Despite these findings, plans by SpaceX and NASA for crewed Mars missions remain intact, though challenges persist in safeguarding astronaut health. Dr. Keith Siew, lead researcher, emphasized the urgency of developing protective measures for vital organs like the kidneys to prevent catastrophic health issues during extended space travel. While shielding remains inadequate, researchers propose exploring technological or pharmaceutical interventions to mitigate risks and ensure the safety and success of future Mars missions.
