Tokyo to Launch Government-Run Dating App to Combat Falling Birth Rate
In an effort to address Japan’s declining birth rate, the Tokyo Metropolitan government will launch a fee-based dating app this summer. The app aims to promote marriage by requiring thorough registration, including proof of single status, annual salary, and a commitment to marriage. Users must provide 15 personal details and undergo an interview. The initiative, backed by a budget of 200 million yen for 2023 and 300 million yen for 2024, seeks to offer a secure platform for those hesitant about traditional dating apps. This move follows a continued drop in births, with Tokyo seeing a 15.2% decline over the past decade. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has labeled the birth rate decline as Japan’s “gravest crisis,” urging immediate action to reverse the trend before 2030, as projections indicate a 30% population decrease by 2070.
