TikTok Removes Music from Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, and Olivia Rodrigo Amid Dispute with Universal Music Group
In the wake of an expired licensing agreement between TikTok and Universal Music Group (UMG), the popular social media platform has removed music from notable artists such as Taylor Swift and The Weeknd. The inability to secure a new deal has sparked a dispute, with UMG claiming TikTok sought to pay a considerably lower rate compared to other social media platforms for access to its music catalog. In response, TikTok countered, accusing UMG of promoting a "false narrative and rhetoric." Consequently, videos featuring UMG music are now muted, and users are unable to create new content with those tracks. The impact extends to artists like Ariana Grande and Katy Perry, witnessing the disappearance of a significant portion of their music from official TikTok pages. Billie Eilish, also under UMG, experiences the removal of all but one song. Notably, tracks such as Sophie Ellis-Bextor's "Murder on the Dancefloor" and Billie Eilish's "What Was I Made For?" featured in a Barbie movie are inaccessible due to the ongoing dispute. However, unofficial and modified versions of the affected tracks remain available on the platform.
