Portugal recently showcased its ability to run on renewable energy for an impressive six consecutive days, relying on wind, solar and hydropower. The success is attributed to Portugal's early commitment to renewables and a 2050 deadline for net-zero carbon emissions set in 2016. The nation's grid, which already phased out coal plants in 2022, aims to eliminate gas generation entirely by 2040. Portugal focuses on diversifying renewable resources, incorporating wind, water and solar power also aims to optimize their complementarity for sustained clean energy use. The next challenge is minimizing the need for gas in meeting energy demands.
