In a plot twist that even the robots themselves would appreciate, Daft Punk have gracefully declined an offer to reunite for a performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The news comes after Thomas Jolly, the artistic director for the games, teased the possibility of the iconic electronic duo gracing the opening ceremony.
"It would be very happy if they were in this ceremony. We can't not think about it," Thomas, 41, told France Inter, echoing the sentiments of fans around the world.
However, hopes were dashed when Thomas later clarified on X/Twitter that, alas, the Get Lucky musicians would not be rekindling their stage magic at the games. "My comments were confusing and generated a lot of expectations," he admitted. "After discussing a possible presence at the ceremony, the group's decision is not to participate. I respect this decision and apologize for the ambiguity of my comments."
A representative for Daft Punk chimed in to set the record straight, confirming to Pitchfork that the duo won't be reuniting for the 2024 Olympics. "This is just a rumor and not true," they asserted.
Fans, it seems, will have to settle for the fond memories of the duo's past performances and their timeless contributions to the world of electronic music. Since their breakup announcement in February 2021, devotees have been holding out hope for a reunion, and though this latest news might be a bit of a letdown, it's a reminder that the duo's legacy lives on through their groundbreaking albums like "Random Access Memories."
In May, Daft Punk even treated fans to a 10th anniversary edition of their fourth and final studio album, cementing their status as legends in the music world. So while the 2024 Olympics won't be graced by the robots, their influence will undoubtedly continue to reverberate through the world of music and beyond.
