Kanye West and Jay Z, once close friends and hip-hop giants, had a famous falling out that extended to their significant others, Kim Kardashian and Beyoncé. However, in 2021, it seemed like they were patching things up when Jay Z appeared on the tracklist for Kanye's 10th album, Donda. Let's delve into the history of their feud and what caused their rift. Jay Z actually discovered Kanye and became his mentor, guiding him through the music industry for several years. This partnership not only benefited Kanye but also revitalized Jay Z's career in the 90s.
Initially, Kanye worked as a producer for Jay Z's label, Roc-A-Fella Records, but later pursued his own career as an artist. They collaborated on several songs, including the global hit "Run This Town," and even released the iconic joint album "Watch The Throne" in 2011. However, the rift between them started in 2009 when Kanye infamously interrupted Taylor Swift at the VMA's, causing not only an uproar with Taylor but also upsetting Jay Z's wife, Beyoncé. Later, Jay Z and Beyoncé skipped Kim and Kanye's wedding, fueling speculation about their deteriorating friendship.
Things worsened when Kim was robbed at gunpoint in Paris, and Jay Z didn't offer support to Kanye during this difficult time. Kanye further escalated tensions in November 2016 during a concert, where he gave a 17-minute speech that included praise for Donald Trump and even asked Jay not to have him assassinated. Jay Z's 2017 album, "4.44," contained several negative references to Kanye, prompting Kanye to retaliate by removing his music from Jay's music streaming service, Tidal, and declaring he was "done with streaming."
In December 2019, there was quite a buzz among fans when Kanye and Jay were spotted talking and snapping photos together during P Diddy's 50th birthday celebration. This was seen as a positive sign of a potential reconciliation between the two. Further fueling the hope of a renewed friendship, Jay Z made an appearance on one of the tracks of Kanye's album "Donda." The album is named in honor of Kanye's late mother, who passed away in 2007. Jay Z featured on the title track, which also happened to be the final song on the album.
