In an unusual move for today's Hollywood, AMC Theatres has taken the reins to release a movie independently.
On Thursday, AMC Theatres surprised everyone by announcing that they will be showing a film version of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour in their theaters starting on October 13. What sets this apart from most movie releases at AMC is that they are also handling the distribution of this concert film.
This distinctive agreement was struck between Taylor Swift's family and the CEO of AMC Theatres, Adam Aron, as reported by Puck magazine.
The Swift family approached Aron with this idea after they found themselves dissatisfied with the discussions they were having with several movie studios about how to release their 2-hour-and-45-minute documentary. The Swifts chose to skip the middleman and went directly to AMC, the world's largest movie theater chain. AMC Theatres has been facing financial challenges (still owing over $4 billion in debt acquired during the pandemic) and uncertainty regarding the upcoming fall movie season due to ongoing strikes by actors and screenwriters. So, Aron eagerly seized the opportunity to showcase the record-breaking tour, which is well on its way to becoming the highest-grossing tour of all time.
As of now, there has been no response from representatives of AMC Theatres or Taylor Swift to Insider's request for comment.
