SAG-AFTRA GEARS UP FOR STRIKE VOTE AGAINST VIDEO GAME COMPANIES, SEALS MORE INTERIM DEALS

On Friday, Fran Drescher, the President of the Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), made an announcement. She revealed that the union plans to hold a vote to decide whether to go on strike against the video game industry. This vote will take place from September 5 to September 25. The current agreement, known as the "Interactive Media Agreement," between SAG-AFTRA and major video game companies like Activision Productions, Electronic Arts, Epic Games, Take 2 Productions, and WB (Warner Bros) Games, expired last year.

It's important to note that if the members vote in favor of a strike, the National Board of SAG-AFTRA is not required to call for a strike. The last time SAG-AFTRA members went on strike against the video game industry was in 2016-2017. This strike, which lasted 183 days and was not supported by the union, ended with a disappointing result for voice and performance artists. They ended up with a "residual" system that doesn't depend on game sales but on how many recording sessions an actor works on for a game, with the maximum payout being just over $2,000.

While approximately 11,000 writers from the Writers Guild of America (WGA) have been on strike since May 2, only about one-third of SAG-AFTRA members joined the writers in their strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) on July 14.
