Over the past decade, BTS has skyrocketed to global fame, and in 2020, the group's members were allowed to delay their military service to continue their performances.
BigHit Music, the label representing BTS, released a statement explaining the group's break, assuring that they will resume their performances after completing their military duties, and that there are exciting plans for the years ahead. Fans are responding with a mix of sadness and respect.
The first member, Jin, is expected to start his military service this month, while the rest of the group will enlist later.
To keep fans engaged, certain members will continue with solo activities through the first half of the coming year. Additionally, BTS has prepared content in advance for release during their hiatus, as revealed in an investor note from Hybe Corporation, the parent company of BigHit.
Though fans will miss the group's live shows for the next couple of years, the impact extends beyond fandom. BTS contributes significantly to South Korea's economy, generating an estimated $3.6 billion annually and contributing $1.1 billion in merchandise sales and other exports, as per Fortune. Remarkably, one out of every 13 tourists visits South Korea solely because of BTS, the report noted.
