SYDNEY SWEENEY SOARS AS SPIDER-WOMAN IN SONY'S MARVEL ODDVERSE!

Spider-Man's next appearance in the MCU remains uncertain, but we're about to witness Spider-Woman's debut, although not in the MCU. Sony's peculiar Marvel sub-universe, which kicked off with Venom and added the viral Morbius, is now venturing into some unique projects, none of which seem to involve Spider-Man himself.

Sydney Sweeney, renowned for her role in Euphoria, has confirmed that she will portray Julia Carpenter in the upcoming Madame Web film, expected on February 16, 2024, unless there are delays. In the comics, Carpenter eventually becomes Spider-Woman, the second iteration after the more widely recognized Jessica Drew. As to why she's Carpenter instead of Jessica Drew, only Sweeney and Sony have the answer.

Although speculation about her role had been circulating, the Variety article is the first to definitively state this. Sweeney will join Dakota Johnson as Madame Web and Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon, also known as Spider-Girl in the comics. They seem to be exploring the full roster. Interestingly, Merced, who plays Corazon (formerly known as the live-action Dora the Explorer), has recently been cast as Hawkgirl in James Gunn's DCU for Superman Legacy. Regarding Sweeney, her rising stardom suggests that Sony might consider a standalone Spider-Woman film for her after this project. However, in the interview, she only responds with a knowing smile when asked about it.

"I was really excited, naturally," Sweeney shared. "I immediately went to the comic store and bought every comic featuring my character."
