The Barbenheimer wave has greatly boosted the box office, as both major films have become big hits. Margot Robbie's movie "Barbie" has now crossed the impressive $1 billion mark, while Cillian Murphy's Oppenheimer has also achieved a remarkable milestone by surpassing $500 million. It has even outperformed Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" on the global stage.
Before its release, there were uncertainties about Oppenheimer's success due to its specific genre and lengthy 3-hour runtime. Some experts doubted whether this biographical thriller would attract audiences. But the reality has been remarkable, with moviegoers eagerly heading to theaters to experience Nolan's creation. As of the latest update from Box Office Mojo, Oppenheimer's worldwide earnings have reached $556.19 million. This achievement has propelled the film to the 5th spot among Christopher Nolan's highest-grossing movies, surpassing Dunkirk's earnings of $527.01 million.
On another note, acclaimed director Francis Ford Coppola, known for movies like "The Godfather" and "Bram Stoker's Dracula," recently praised the success of the "Barbenheimer" films in Hollywood. He noted that the fact that people are filling theaters to watch these movies, which are unique stories without sequels or prequels, is a victory for the art of cinema.
