Robert Downey Jr. and Jimmy Fallon made a surprise appearance on "The Howard Stern Show" and spilled the beans about auditioning for the 2006 romantic-comedy "The Holiday." During the auditions, Downey tried out for Jude Law's role, and Fallon went for Jack Black's part. They both knew they weren't top contenders in director Nancy Meyers' eyes, but they were hopeful.
As Downey shared, they were called in as seat fillers to read with the female actors during the auditions. He was convinced he could outshine Law and secure the role, but things didn't go as planned. After attempting his British accent, Kate Winslet, one of the actresses auditioning, humorously quipped, "That was the worst British accent I've ever heard." Despite the setback, Downey took it lightly and decided to make the most of it by taking some gummy bears from the minibar.
While Kate Winslet playfully teased Robert Downey Jr. during the audition, Jimmy Fallon had nothing but admiration for him. Fallon remembered thinking that Downey was the best actor he had ever worked with, and the experience left a lasting impact on him. In fact, after that audition, Fallon decided to quit auditioning altogether.
Even though Nancy Meyers appreciated their performances, she ultimately felt that neither Fallon nor Downey was the perfect fit for the roles they auditioned for in "The Holiday."
"The Holiday" centers around two women, played by Winslet and Cameron Diaz, who exchange homes across the Atlantic during the Christmas season. Diaz's character falls for Law's book editor, while Winslet's character finds love with Black's film composer, who happens to be Law's character's brother.
