'Across the Spider-Verse' not only stands as one of the finest movies of 2023 but also solidifies Miles Morales as one of the greatest superheroes in cinematic history. From the opening moments, Gwen Stacy (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld) sets the tone with her statement, "Let's do things differently this time." This mantra encapsulates the spirit of the Spider-Verse series, which began with the acclaimed 2018 film 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.' By introducing a multitude of Spider-Characters, it breathed new life into the Spider-Man franchise, earning an Oscar for Best Animated Feature and revitalizing the superhero genre.
Returning to the Spider-Verse over five years later, we reunite with Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), whose journey takes on even higher stakes. The challenge for the series is to follow up on a film that is hailed as one of the best animated movies and superhero films of all time, with a significant impact on entertainment, from influencing other films and TV shows to showcasing the potential of the hero, as seen in 'Spider-Man: No Way Home.' Yet, 'Across the Spider-Verse' manages to match or even surpass the brilliance of its predecessor. With stunning animation, a deeper emotional connection to the characters and their relationships, and an exhilarating narrative, it stands as one of the most captivating, thrilling, and visually stunning films in recent memory. By the film's conclusion, the debate over the best cinematic Spider-Man is settled: it's Miles Morales. Furthermore, this series might very well be the greatest superhero movie franchise thus far.
The story of 'Across the Spider-Verse' takes place a little over a year after the events of 'Into the Spider-Verse.' Gwen joins a group of Spider-People who traverse different universes, attempting to close the dimensional tears caused by the collider. Meanwhile, in his own universe, Miles has become more adept at his superhuman abilities but struggles with the familiar challenge of balancing his alter-ego with his real-life responsibilities, which causes a strain on his relationship with his parents. He also longs for the company of his Spider-Friends, especially Gwen, who hasn't visited him since their last adventure. As if things weren't complicated enough, a new villain named The Spot (Jason Schwartzman), claiming to be Miles' nemesis, discovers how to explore other universes through his dimensional portals. When Gwen finally visits Miles, she introduces him to a society of Spiders led by Miguel O'Hara/Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), who work to maintain the stability of the multiverse and combat The Spot. Miguel has witnessed the dire consequences of disrupted events and dedicates himself to preserving the proper order of the Spider-Verse. However, when Miles learns what it means for him and his role as a hero, he is faced with a challenging decision that could test the essence of being a Spider-Man.
With the exploration of the multiverse comes an array of new characters, including Spider-Woman (Issa Rae), who aids Miguel and the Spider-Society in their mission, and Pavitr Prabhakar (Karan Soni), the Spider-Man of Mumbattan—a fusion of Mumbai and Manhattan. 'Across the Spider-Verse' introduces numerous Spider-People, each with their unique traits and backgrounds. Remarkably, the film manages to balance the introduction of these characters and the vast opportunities they present without overwhelming the audience. The world created in 'Across the Spider-Verse' is consistently captivating, even with the multitude of concepts it embraces.
Furthermore, the film ventures into countless worlds, each distinguished by its animation style and tone. Every universe could sustain its own standalone film, showcasing the limitless possibilities within the Spider-Verse. From
