Benedict Cumberbatch and his family experienced a terrifying incident when a former chef from a luxury hotel launched a knife attack at their home, causing them to fear for their lives.
Jack Bissell, aged 35, forcefully entered the actor's £3.5 million residence in north London by kicking through the iron gate in the front garden. He proceeded to rip the intercom off the wall while making a series of alarming threats.
During the attack, Bissell shouted, "I know you've moved here, I hope it burns down," without providing an explanation for his actions. Benedict Cumberbatch, aged 46, his wife Sophie Hunter, aged 45, and their three young children were inside the house at the time and could hear the commotion caused by Bissell as he vandalized the garden and shouted abusive remarks.
The former chef, who previously worked as a chef de partie at the prestigious five-star Beaumont Hotel in Mayfair, pulled out one of the family's plants, threw it at the garden wall, spat at the intercom, and forcefully removed it using a fish knife.
A source close to the family revealed, "Naturally, all of the family were absolutely terrified and thought this guy was going to get in and hurt them. Luckily, it never went that far. Benedict and Sophie have had many sleepless nights since worrying that they may be targeted again. The fact that it was a targeted intrusion makes it a lot more scary."
After the incident, Bissell fled the scene but was apprehended by the police, who discovered his DNA on the intercom. He pleaded guilty to criminal damage in Wood Green Crown Court and was fined £250. Additionally, he received a three-year restraining order that prohibits him from approaching the Cumberbatch family or their residential area.
Prosecutors revealed that prior to targeting Benedict Cumberbatch's home, Bissell had purchased two packets of pitta bread from a nearby shop and informed the shopkeeper that he intended to break into the actor's house and set it on fire. The motive behind Bissell's actions remains unclear as he offered no defense during the court proceedings.
Benedict Cumberbatch acquired the five-bedroom property in 2015. As for Bissell, he had two employment periods at the Beaumont Hotel, one from 2017 to 2018 and the other from 2019 to 2020. In 2015, he gained attention when he was photographed being arrested in his underpants during a protest against military intervention in Syria in central London.
Bissell's LinkedIn profile claims that he created a dish that still remains on the restaurant's menu. He has a previous conviction for theft, three warnings for property-related offenses, a public order offense, and a drug offense.
