The unexpected collaboration between Taylor Swift and Ice Spice on the deluxe version of her "Midnights" album has sparked controversy and raised eyebrows.
After the announcement on Wednesday that the rapper "Munch" would be featured on Swift's track "Karma," fans of both artists expressed criticism towards the collaboration. The backlash stems from Swift's association with Matty Healy, the lead vocalist of the English band The 1975.
In January, Healy made derogatory comments about Ice Spice during his appearance on "The Adam Friedland Show" podcast. He laughed at the hosts' jokes that speculated about the rapper's ethnicity, making offensive remarks such as referring to her as an "Inuit spice girl" and a "chubby Chinese lady," while imitating accents associated with Hawaiian and Chinese cultures. (Ice Spice is of Nigerian and Dominican heritage.)
During the same podcast, Healy encouraged jokes about the Japanese internment during World War II, joining in by mocking Japanese accents. He also made inappropriate comments about watching explicit videos featuring the brutalization of Black women on a pornographic website.
In April, Healy made a half-hearted apology to Ice Spice during a performance by his band in Auckland, New Zealand. He clarified that his apology was not because he was upset about his jokes being misunderstood but rather because he didn't want Ice Spice to perceive him negatively. He expressed remorse, saying, "I love you, Ice Spice. I'm so sorry."
Fans were quick to point out that Ice Spice will be the first Black woman to be featured on one of Swift's songs, further intensifying the conversation surrounding the collaboration.
