According to a company insider, Marvel Studios' plans for Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) may have been derailed due to a surprising shift in policy. The source suggests that Marvel changed their long-term intentions after witnessing Jonathan Majors' captivating portrayal of He Who Remains in the season one finale of Loki.
Majors reprised his role as Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and despite mixed reviews for the film, his performance received universal acclaim. The movie's post-credits scene hinted at Kang and his various variants dominating the future of the MCU, with even the next Avengers film, titled The Kang Dynasty, focusing on the character. However, these plans were quickly thrown into uncertainty when Majors faced arrest and assault charges as part of an ongoing investigation.
As a result of this issue, the studio's intentions to center Phase 6 around Majors and Kang have been cast into doubt. Marvel publicly maintains that no decisions have been made on the matter until the legal process progresses further. However, Joanna Robinson, a writer and author of the upcoming book MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, revealed during an appearance on The Ringer's The Big Picture podcast that she was informed, in the course of her work, that Kang was never intended to be the focal point of the MCU. It was Majors' performance that reportedly changed the minds of everyone involved. Robinson, a respected senior writer for Vanity Fair who has covered Marvel extensively, discussed how Majors' portrayal influenced a creative shift in approach. Unfortunately, this change of plans has now encountered a significant setback.
It is important to note that Majors has denied all charges brought against him thus far. However, the absence of his character in the latest trailer for the second season of Loki, despite the character being teased in the post-credits scene of Quantumania, raises questions about his future involvement. Loki Season 2 is scheduled for release in October, and fans will eagerly await any updates regarding Majors' status in the MCU.
