RAY STEVENSON: THE RRR, THOR & STAR WARS ACTOR HAS PASSED AWAY AT 58.

Ray Stevenson, a talented actor from Northern Ireland known for his notable roles in various films and television series, has passed away at the age of 58. Stevenson, who portrayed the villainous British governor in RRR, Volstagg in the Thor films, and was set to appear as a main antagonist in the upcoming Star Wars series Ahsoka, died on Sunday, just four days before his birthday. According to reports from the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, he had been hospitalized due to a sudden illness while filming the movie Cassino in Ischia, an island in Italy.

Following the news of his untimely demise, many individuals expressed their condolences and paid tribute to Stevenson. SS Rajamouli, the director of RRR, fondly remembered his infectious energy and vibrant presence on set, describing the experience of working with him as pure joy. Harry Potter actor Matthew Lewis, who acted alongside Stevenson as a child in the television film Some Kind of Life, expressed his sadness on Twitter, reminiscing about the time when Stevenson played his father in his very first TV appearance nearly three decades ago. Lewis praised Stevenson as a skilled actor with a fascinating career and expressed gratitude for the invaluable experience he gained from working with him in the industry.

Born in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, in 1964, Stevenson's family relocated to England when he was eight years old. He attended the Bristol Old Vic theatre school and subsequently ventured into British television before making his film debut in Paul Greengrass's 1998 film The Theory of Flight. He portrayed a knight of the round table in Antoine Fuqua's 2004 movie King Arthur and later starred as the lead character in the pre-Disney Marvel adaptation Punisher: War Zone. Although Punisher received mixed reviews, Stevenson had another notable Marvel role in the first three Thor films, where he portrayed the Asgardian warrior Volstagg. His filmography also includes prominent roles in the Divergent trilogy, GI Joe: Retaliation, and The Transporter: Refueled.

Standing at an imposing height of 1.91 meters (six feet three inches), Stevenson often played military characters, drawing on his affinity for the role of an "old warrior at heart," as he described in an interview. His breakthrough came with the HBO series Rome, where he portrayed the roguish Titus Pullo, a performance that propelled his career in the United States and earned him a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) card at the age of 44. Rome aired from 2005 to 2007 and left a lasting impact on Stevenson, who acknowledged it as one of the most significant years of his life, teaching him to focus solely on his craft and appreciate the job itself.

Noteworthy among his television roles, Stevenson portrayed Blackbeard in the Starz series Black Sails, Commander Jack Swinburne in the German television series Das Boot, and Othere in Vikings. He also lent his voice to Star Wars Rebels and The Clone Wars, voicing the character Gar Saxon. Additionally, he had a role in the upcoming Star Wars live-action series Ahsoka, where he was set to play the antagonist Baylan Skoll. The eight-episode season is expected to premiere on Disney+ in August.

In a 2020 interview with Backstage, Stevenson expressed his admiration for acting icons such as Lee Marvin and Gene Hackman. He greatly respected their consistent and fearless performances, focusing on characters he could personally identify with rather than aspiring to be a young, attractive leading man. Stevenson shared three sons with his partner, Italian anthropologist Elisabetta Caraccia, whom he met during his time working on Rome.
