Tom Hanks, the acclaimed actor of "A Man Called Otto," has shared his pick for the next James Bond, and he's rooting for the fan-favorite Idris Elba to don the suave suit of the iconic spy. Hanks, 66, expressed his admiration for Elba's work and believes he would be the perfect choice for the role.
While Elba has garnered immense support from fans and even the Bond franchise's producer, Barbara Broccoli, he remains uncertain about taking on the role. In a podcast interview, Elba revealed that playing Bond isn't a personal career goal and that he feels the weight of global expectations associated with the character. He recognizes that the decision is beyond his personal desires and lies in the hands of the nation.
The role of James Bond has been portrayed by Daniel Craig since 2006's "Casino Royale" until the latest installment, "No Time to Die," released in 2021. Broccoli and co-producer Michael G. Wilson have expressed their admiration for Elba but emphasized that a new Bond film is a significant commitment and a long-term investment for both the actor and the production team.
While Elba's potential casting as Bond has generated excitement, there has been some criticism as well. In 2015, "007" author Anthony Horowitz commented that he believed Elba was "too street" for the role, suggesting that other black actors may be better suited. However, Horowitz clarified that his opinion was not based on race but rather on the perceived roughness that he associated with Elba's portrayal.
In addition to Elba, other actors like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Richard Madden, and "Bridgerton" star Regé-Jean Page have also been mentioned in casting rumors, adding to the anticipation surrounding the next James Bond installment.
