In a heartwarming display of friendship, rugby league legend Kevin Sinfield carried his former teammate Rob Burrow over the finish line at the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon. The event, named after Burrow who is battling motor neurone disease, drew over 12,000 participants. Sinfield, inspired by Burrow, pushed him in a specially-adapted wheelchair before lifting him up and carrying him the rest of the way, much to the delight of spectators.
As the crowd cheered, Sinfield gave Burrow a kiss, symbolizing their incredible achievement. The marathon, which started and ended at Headingley Stadium, garnered support from both runners and spectators along the 26.2-mile course. The emotional day brought tears of joy to many, witnessing the two friends completing the marathon together.
The event aimed to raise funds for The Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease Appeal, Leeds Hospitals Charity, and various other causes. Sinfield, known for his fundraising efforts, expressed gratitude for the support and praised the organizers for creating such an incredible event in Burrow's honor. Having raised over £8 million for MND charities through his previous running challenges, Sinfield continues to champion the cause.
The Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon received an overwhelming response this year, prompting organizers to announce its return in 2024. Jenn Scribbins from the Motor Neurone Disease Association emphasized the importance of the event in combating the devastating disease, which affects six people daily with no known cure. The funds raised through the marathon bring them closer to finding a cure. The day was a celebration of friendship, community support, and the determination to make a difference.
