Manhattan – After sitting in a jury office for almost a decade last month the heirs of Ed Townsend finally saw their lawsuit against Ed Sheeran go in to federal courts. The fund was suing the British singer-songwriter for $100 million alleging that there are similarities between his song ‘Thinking Out Loud” and Marvin Gaye’s 1973 soul classic “Let’s Get It On”.
Originally the jury settled for a $7.5Million in payout in exchange of not taking the lawsuit to courts but Sheeran decided against it and suited up to walk into Manhattan’s federal courts with his head held high. And he made sure to not walk in empty handed as he held on to his trusted guitar which he used to sing a part of the original version of the song to the jury to prove that he is in the clear of copy write clauses.
Finally yesterday (06.05.2023) the jury of Judge Louis S. Stanton’s Federal Court in Manhattan new York came to the unanimous verdict that Ed has NOT copied Marvin Gaye’s song and he’s in the clear from having to pay any monetary payout.
After the final hearing Ed stood for some interviews where he shared his feelings saying he’s “obviously very happy”.
"It looks like I'm not going to have to retire from my day job after all," he said in regards to the statement he made where he suggested he’d quit music making if he loses this lawsuit. He touched on it again "But at the same time I am absolutely frustrated that baseless claims like this are allowed to go to court at all. If the jury had decided this matter the other way we might as well say goodbye to the creative freedom of songwriters."
He was then comforted by Ed Townsend’s family “The one thing that felt like the biggest win for me was, afterwards, Katherine Griffin Townsend and her family and everyone came up to me, hugged me and said, ‘We believe you,’” adding “And I got to walk away … from it knowing I did the right thing.”
Ed also spoke about how he got to keep his dignity in tack and walk away with his head held high “On both sides, it takes a massive toll — both personally and financially — but it’s about heart and integrity, and that’s why I fought it was, I can’t be accused of something that I didn’t do. So I just had to prove that,”
After the entire event Ed grabbed his guitar and hopped on top of a car and performed to his fans who had flocked to the streets of Manhattan to show their support.
