Ed Sheeran returned to the witness stand to defend his 2014 mega hit “Thinking Out Loud”. Sheeran is currently being sued by the heirs of Ed Townsend the co-writer of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On”. But this time he didn’t come alone! He brought his trusty guitar with him.
On Thursday during the hearing at Judge Louis L. Stanton’s Manhattan federal courts the British singer took to the podium to prove his point by serenading the jury with a four chord sequence of Thinking Out Loud on the guitar accompanied by his vocals.
He performed what he calls the original version of the song with lyrics “I’m singing out now” instead of the iconicn “I’m thinking out loud”, he also sang the opening line “when your legs don’t work like they used to before”. It’s safe to say that court hearings for celebrities run a little differently to a common civilian’s!
During his testimony he also spoke about the writing process of the song saying him and his writer Wade spent a two-day writing session on the lyrics and closed the deal on the song. He says he remembers stepping out of the shower and hearing Wade play the chords on his guitar saying “we ne dot do something with that”.
The singer is expected to return to the stand for cross-examination when the trial resumes on Monday.
