2022 ROUNDUP: MOVIES!

2022 has been a defining year for Hollywood. Multiple game changers were introduced to us,
some broke record, some broke hearts and some made history.

Here are the biggest movies of 2022.

Top Gun Maverick: The long awaited sequel for the 1986 hit Top Gun starring Tom Cruise finally
made it’s premier in May. The second movie flows now veteran Navy aviator Pete “Maverick”
Mitchell as he finds himself caught between lines. He finds himself stuck being at the right place
but also facing his demons. Top Gun: Maverick also stars Val Kilmer, Miles Teller, Jennifer
Connelly, Glen Powell.

The Batman: bringing a redemption arc for DC comics, The Batman saw the beginning of a new
era starring the latest & prettiest face of DC; Robert Pattinson. The Batman was packed with
action that it kept you at the edge of your seat through the entire 2hrs 56mins of the movie.

Everything Everywhere, All At Once: was as accurate as the name. Coming from the power
house of A24 productions, the movie helped the company reach a new height of weird.
Starring Michell Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu and Jamie Lee Curtis. Everything
Everywhere, All At Once follows a Chinese immigrant family in the United States the story is
wound around the matriarch of the Wangs – Evelyn Quan Wang (Yeoh) the semi-successful
proprietor of a laundromat who is on the verge of divorcing her no-good too-soft-for-life
husband, when she’s suddenly made aware of her strange superpowers. We’re not exactly sure
what they are exactly.. but they’re really cool! The rest is as the name goes,
Everything… Everywhere… All. At. Once.

Elvis: some of you might not be unfamiliar with Austin Butler but many are. Well thanks to Baz
Luhrmann and Warner Bros. Austin made quite the name for himself portraying the hip
shaking, shoulder jiving, lip biting King of Rock n’ Roll. Elvis follows the life story through the
depleting mind of his deranged abusive manager Colonel Tom Parker. The movie covers a bit of
Elvis’ birth but quickly fast-forwards to his childhood where young Elvis (Chaydon Jay)
accidentally discovers gospel music which lead to the discovery of the Elvis we all know and
love, the movie follows him through his career and marriage to Priscilla Presley all the way to
his last performance of Unchained Melody in Vegas to his untimely death.

MCU: No list and no year would be complete without Marvel and their very confusing
Cinematic Universe, and this year took the cake.

The year started off strong with Sony releasing Spider Man: No Way Home. Staring Tom
Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon and Benedict Cumberbatch. Where Peter asks for Dr.
Stranger’s assistance to help turn him from neighborhood villain back to everyone’s favorite
neighborhood super hero.

Following that was one of the biggest movies of the year, a movie that all movie goers were
excited for. Starring everyone’s favorite Brit Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange stuck on
Earth: 616 when he’s hunted down by Miss Marvel (Xochitl Gomez) along with all the things
that are hunting her down. America Charvez needs our Dr. Strange’s help to defeat the
darkhold that Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlett Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) holds. The two unlikely
companions (as with all great movies) set off on a journey across the cosmos, stepping into the
maddening chaos of the multiverse. Joining Benedict Cumberbatch, Xochitl Gomez & Elizabeth
Olsen on this adventure are other fan favorites Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, Patrick
Stewart, Hayley Atwell, John Krasinski.
Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has garnered over $955M by Jan 2023.

And the movie that stole everyone’s hearts was the sequel to a beloved movie that made
history & opened doors for many people, especially BIPOC.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was a movie that had many fans biting their nails in
anticipation. After the death of the main man himself; Chadwick Boseman, many MCU fans
wondered how they were going to write his character arc! Were they going to recast T’challa?
Were they going to write him off? Were they going to crown a new Black Panther? Well without
any spoilers, here’s the synopsis. The nation of Wakanda is under attack by an army of blue-
skinned, water-breathing superhumans lead by their 500 year old king Namor (Tenoch Huerta),
the Kingdom of Talokan has fallen into danger after humans have found Vibranium in their
ocean depths. After refusing to help the Talokans and rescuing the young scientist who
invented the machine that detects Vibranium, Riri Williams, Wakanda has now become the
Talokan’s main nemesis. And it is upto the Black Panther to help save the Wakandas. The movie
stars Latitia Wright, Angella Basset, Tenoch Huerta, Lupita N’yong’o, Danai Gurira, Winston
Duke, Martin Freeman, Michael B. Jordan and Chadwick Boseman.

Of course we can’t forget the biggest movie of the year, on par with Top Gun: Maverick,
garnering over a billion dollar within the first two weeks of release Avatar: The Way of Water!
A decade and a half after the original storyline, The Way of Water follows Jack Sully & Neytiri
family of 7 over the span of several months as they lead a happy life until one day they notice a
new star in the sky which brings back a familiar threat and forces them to flee with their five
children to the land of the Metkayina Clan in the Pandoran oceans, where they seek refuge.
