Angelina Jolie is to visit flood-ravaged Pakistan, in attempts to bring international attention to the humanitarian disaster that is currently unfolding in the country.
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) made the statement on Monday.
Due to record breaking monsoon rains and melting glaciers in Pakistan’s Northern mountainous region, a third of the country’s land has now been submerged, claiming the lives of more 1,500 people and impacting over an estimated 33million more, washing away homes, roadways and railways.
Authorities say it could take up to six months for the flood waters to recede, and fears are rising about waterborne diseases including cholera, dengue and malaria.
Jolie “is visiting to witness and gain understanding of the situation, and to hear from people affected directly about their needs, and about steps to prevent such suffering in the future,”
