The second teaser trailer of the HBO Max series “The Idol” dropped over the weekend and it’s all
everyone can talk about.
Variety describe the series as “a self-help guru and leader of a modern-day cult, who develops a
complicated relationship with an up-and-coming pop idol.” And oh boy is it cult-y! The series
tackles with every niche of what makes a great cult, from gore to organised mass chaos and possibly
even some brainwashing. The series stars The Weeknd (who also created & produced the show) as
the owner of a L.A. club, that is also the “leader” of the secret cult, he’s told to be a somewhat quiet,
titular character. The real star of the show is young Lily-Rose Depp who is stepping out of her
super-star dad’s shadow and finding her own wings in the realm of acting. Lily-Rose plays the not-
so naive rising star, who in true Gen Z style would give anything to be famous and of course that
makes the best of her. The series also stars Troye Sivan, Rachel Sennott, Melanie Liburd, Tunde
Adebimpe and of course the one person all of kpop is looking forwards to seeing, BlackPink’s
Jennie. Jennie takes on the role of a party girl and fans are taking a wild guess and saying she’s also
playing Lily-Rose’s (best?) friend turn enemy in a real antagonist twist.
