The film is directed by Jared Hess, who previously directed Napoleon Dynamite. It is based on the popular 2011 computer game. Jason Momoa, star of 'Aquaman' and 'Dune,' has signed a deal with Warner Bros. to feature in a live-action Minecraft film.
More than eight years ago, Warner Bros. announced that a Minecraft film was in the works. Because of the pandemic in 2020, a release date of March 4, 2022 was pushed back indefinitely and has yet to be updated.
Minecraft, one of the most popular video games of all time, allows players to explore 3D environments where they can gather resources, make objects, and construct constructions. The live-action feature will join a slew of previous video game adaptations, including Sonic the Hedgehog (and its sequel), Uncharted, and Mortal Kombat in 2021.
Lydia Winters and Vu Bui of Minecraft developer Mojang Studios are among the film's producers. Jill Messick, who worked on the project until her death in 2018, will receive a posthumous producing credit. Mary Parent and Roy Lee are also producing. Cale Boyter, Jon Spaihts, and Jon Berg serve as executive producers for the picture.
