Adele's 30 is the first album in almost a year to sell a million copies in the United States. According to preliminary reports to MRC Data, 30 has sold just over 1 million traditional album copies in the United States, across all formats (CD, vinyl LP, cassette, and digital album download). On November 19, the album was released. In its debut week in the United States (week ending November 25), 30 sold 692,000 copies, and 225,000 copies the following week (ending Dec. 2).
Taylor Swift's Folklore, released on July 24, 2020, was the most recent new release to sell a million copies in the United States (excluding catalog [previous] albums that may have done so). In recent years, selling a million copies of an album in the United States has been quite rare. As people have embraced consuming music via streaming platforms, the number of million-selling albums has decreased. Only three albums launched in 2019 have sold a million copies (Billie Eilish's When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, Taylor Swift's Lover, and Harry Styles' Fine Line), while only one album released in 2018 (Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's A Star Is Born soundtrack) sold a million.
