Oscar-winner and filmmaker, Angelina Jolie officially joined Instagram. She was able to amass a record-breaking 2.1 million followers in just three hours after signing up. Her account had accumulated 9.9 million users and counting as of 27th August 2021. Jennifer Aniston was the previous holder who reached 1 million follows within five hours.

Jolie planned to use the platform as well as her reach as a means to give the less fortunate a voice. “I’ve come on Instagram to share their stories and the voices of those across the globe who are fighting for their basic human rights” she captioned. Her first three posts focused on the recent events taking place in Afghanistan; a letter from an Afghan girl and refugee statistics of citizens displaced worldwide as a result of the situation in the country.

Many high-tier pages and users commented on her posts, praising her efforts and initiative to raise awareness, including Alyssa Milano who added “Thank you for being you.”
