Sha’Carri Richardson is not selected to represent the U.S relay team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, after failing a drug test.

This happened despite her winning the 100-meter race during the Olympic trials in June. During the drug test, she tested positive for marijuana, which violates the 2021 World Anti-Doping Code. The United States Anti-Doping Agency confirmed she was suspended following the drug test.

Richardson spoke out during an interview, saying “I want to take responsibility for my actions… I know what I did, I know what I’m supposed to do, I know what I’m allowed not to do, and I still made that decision.”

She explained that she turned to cannabis after learning from a reporter that her biological mother passed away, which happened just one week before the Olympic trials in Oregon. She stated that she went into a state of emotional panic, and went on to apologize to all her supporters.
