A marine biologist from Scripps Institution of Oceanography has newly discovered a new species of chaenopsid blenny in the waters of the Cocos Island (Isla del Coco), which lies about 563 km off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

Blennies are a batch of over 900 species of fishes observed in coastal areas throughout the world’s oceans.

They are normally small, and have lengthened bodies and relatively large eyes.

The newly-discovered species of blenny scientifically named Coralliozetus clausus and dubbed the pandemic blenny, is one of a cornucopia of cryptobenthic species found off Cocos Island.

These fishes reside on the seafloor and are exceptionally hard to detect and quantify because of their tiny size, coloration and habits.
