WhatsApp users around the world made more than 1.4 billion voice and video calls on New Year's Eve 2020, which is the highest number of calls in a single day on the platform, according to Facebook.

While New Year’s Eve has always caused great sharpness in usage on Facebook’s sites, the COVID-19 pandemic is making new records.

WhatsApp invitations to the New Year celebration have increased by more than 50 percent compared to the same day last year, according to the social media company.

Other Facebook services such as Instagram and Messenger have seen huge ups and downs in usage on New Year's Eve 2020.

New Year's Day received almost twice as many group calls as the average day for service. The best AR effect used on Messenger is "2020 Fireworks".

While New Year’s Eve has historically been a hectic night for its services, this year has set new records as people turned to technology to stay socially remotely connected.

Live broadcasts on New Year's Eve have also increased, with New Year's Eve 2020 having more than 55 million live broadcasts worldwide on Facebook and Instagram.
