Academics, journalists, and First Amendment lawyers are rallying behind New York University researchers in a clash with Facebook over demands to stop collecting data on who is being targeted micro by political ads on the world-dominated social media platform.
Researchers say the controversial tool is crucial in understanding how Facebook is being used as a way to misinform and manipulate.
In a letter to researchers on October 16, a Facebook administrator demanded that the special plugin for Chrome and Firefox browsers used by 6,500 volunteers across the United States be disabled and that the data obtained be removed. The plugin allows researchers to see which ads are displayed for each volunteer; Facebook allows advertisers to advertise based on specific statistics that go beyond race, age, gender, and political preferences.
Executive, Alison Hendrix, said the tool violates Facebook rules. His letter threatened "additional enforcement action" if the downgrade was not implemented by November 30.
