CAN SUPPLEMENTS REALLY HELP FIGHT COVID-19?
Consumers have long been turning to vitamins and herbs and trying to protect themselves from the disease. The epidemic is no different - especially with headlines shouting "This supplement can save you from the coronavirus".

It helps to be a famous enthusiast. When President Donald Trump was diagnosed with COVID-19, his pill weapon contained vitamin D and zinc. In an Instagram chat with actress Jennifer Corner in September, epidemiologist Anthony Fauci said vitamins C and D, in general, are ways to boost the immune system. "If you have a vitamin D deficiency, it can easily affect your infection. I do not recommend taking vitamin D supplements, I do it myself."

But it is unclear whether additional drugs that counteract COVID-19 can actually be prevented or treated. Because the disease is so new, researchers do not have much time for larger experiments that provide better answers.

Instead, scientists often rely on old data as new. Some studies have looked at the effects of patients who usually take certain supplements - and have found some promising indications. But so far there is little information from scientifically rigorous tests that give doctors confidence when prescribing additional medications.
