BENTOTA IS MORE THAN A BEACH

The best beach on the west coast of Sri Lanka starts at Bentota. It is a vast stretch of sun-blessed golden sand that stretches south as far as the eye can see from the wide mouth of the Bentota River. Bentota National Holiday Resort was established in the 1970s and since then Bentota has become a favorite, year-round holiday destination for Sri Lankans and visitors alike.
There are beautiful, affordable guest houses, mass-market gallery hotels, and rich and fashionable designer-chic boutique villas. However, Bentota is more than just a city for tourists, although most of its stores are stocked with tourist knickknacks. A few minutes inland from the beach walled hotels are the places that attract visitors. Despite tourism - or rural life survives on the bypasses and backwaters of Bentota, waiting to be found by anyone interested in exploring independently. This can be done by walking, borrowing a bicycle on a soft bicycle on a leafy path, or renting a tuk-tuk (three-wheeler taxi) for a village tour.
The center of Bentota is a kind of Toy Town Square, an unrecognized monument to the late Jeffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka's most famous architect. There is a bank on one side, a post office on the other, a police station on the opposite side, and the Bentota train station on the fourth side. Bawa’s Bridge on the Railroad is notable and, strangely enough, pedestrians use it to serve beachfront hotels in the middle of the road.
Geoffrey Bawa and his brother Beavis were behind two of Sri Lanka's largest private estates: Lunuganga and Brief. Both are within the short movement of Town Square. They are for evergreen examples of numerous plants; A fusion of classical western garden design (lots of statues and disturbing foliage) and waterfront, eastern vistas. Each is worth an afternoon visit.
