Some genetic inheritance from Neanderthals may increase the risk of developing severe COVID-19.
Stretching of DNA on human chromosome 3 has previously been found to be associated with an increased risk of developing severe disease from coronavirus infection and hospitalization. Some human genetics have been known to affect immune system function and other aspects of human health since humans interacted with Neanderthals 50,000 years ago (SN: 2/11/16). So the researchers decided whether human relatives, known as Neanderthals and extinct Denisovans, also share the dangerous area.
“I fell out of my chair. It was really surprising that the genetic variants were similar to Neanderthals, ”said Hugo Seberg, an evolutionary geneticist at the Max Blanc Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. Zeberg and his Max Planck colleague Svante Pääb report the findings of Nature on September 30th.
Ancestors Half of South Asians - especially Bangladeshis - today about 16 percent of people in Europe have this bit of Neanderthal heritage, a new study has found.
