Polonnaruwa is a city and a municipal council in the Polonnaruwa District in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka. The Kaduruwela area is the new city of Polonnaruwa and the rest of Polonnaruwa is the royal ancient city of the kingdom of Polonnaruwa.
Polonnaruwa, the second oldest of the kingdoms of Sri Lanka, was first established by the Chola dynasty in the 10th century after the successful invasion of the country's capital, Anuradhapura. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa has been declared a World Heritage Site.
The new Polonnaruwa is currently undergoing a major development project called "Polonnaruwa Awareness" under the auspices of President Maithripala Sirisena. The development of all sectors in Polonnaruwa including roads, electricity, agriculture, education, health, and the environment will be developed in detail.
Today the ancient city of Polonnaruwa is one of the best planned archaeological monuments in the country, a testament to the morality and majesty of the first rulers of the kingdom. In 1982 the Duran Duran music video Save A used its beauty as a background to film scenes of prayer. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Near the ancient city, there are many hotels (especially for tourists), a small town, some polished shops, and places to meet everyday needs. About 6 km from the town and the main road are government institutions in the newly built area known as the “New City”. The largest school in the district, the Royal Central College, Polonnaruwa is located in the new city.
