THE HISTORIC LANDMARK OF SRI LANKA: POINT PEDRO

Point Pedro is located very northeast of the island facing the Bay of Bengal. The name of the place is derived from the Portuguese Punta Das Pedras, meaning Stony or Rocky Point. The lighthouse is located in the eastern part of the town. This point is marked by a concrete slab on the edge of a coral with the Sri Lankan flag drawn on it.
The site is easily accessible by any vehicle along the road that runs along the beach. A small military camp is located along the small length of the beach. You can park your vehicle here and walk on the waves and corals at this point.
Point Pedro Beach is one of the best sandy beaches in the Jaffna district.
Cotton is produced in fertile calcium red lettuce soils around the cotton field. Point Pedro East Coast is 3 miles wide, 20 miles long, and stretches up to 100 feet with sand dunes up to Talayadi.
Microbial soils have a deep groundwater table that contains one billion liters of freshwater. The 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami raised the salt content of groundwater. The tsunami destroyed parts of the city and submerged parts of the city to a depth of 4 feet.
