EA ELIMINATING ORIGIN BRAND WITH EA DESKTOP APP

Electronic Arts are leaving behind its Origin name for something new: EA plans to substitute it with a new and improved desktop app (called EA Desktop), and “double down” on the EA Play branding, as per reports.
EA is describing its novel app as a “next-generation PC gaming platform.” Using the EA Desktop app, users can subscribe to EA’s game’s subscription services, EA Play and EA Play Pro — the publisher’s recent renaming of the EA Access service. Players can then subsequently download these games onto their PC and play them for as long as they hold the subscription.
With this rebranding, EA will remove the ‘Origin’ name from its subsequent line of products. EA senior vice president Michael Blank said in a statement that the new EA Desktop app will be much quicker than Origin, and lets players conveniently interact with their games.
Origin, which initiated way back in 2011, has a reputation for being cumbersome and slow, as a platform, which may be the main factor in EA’s complete rebranding.
This news comes shortly a couple of months after EA started transferring its PC titles to Steam.
When the migration happens, players will continue to have their EA Origin game licenses and friends lists on the EA Desktop app. It’s currently uncertain whether EA will put a complete stop to Origin, and its transition to EA Desktop.
