Batticaloa is situated on the eastern coast of Sri Lanka on a flat coastal plain surrounded by the Indian Ocean in the east and occupies the central part of eastern Sri Lanka. Batticaloa is infamous for its Lagoons. Batticaloa has three lagoons such as Batticaloa Lagoon, Valaichchenai Lagoon, and Vakari (Panichchankerni) Lagoon.


Among these lagoons, the Batticaloa Lagoon is the largest lagoon. There is a multitude of islands within the Batticaloa Lagoon such as Puliayantheevu, Buffalo Island, Bone Island; several bridges are built across the lagoon which connects the landmasses and the islands. The Puliayantheevu is the urban part of the city.


The largest bridge of all is Lady Manning Bridge situated at Kallady, which acts as the main access path to the city from the southern places of the district. This bridge is also well renowned for Singing fishes which were thought to be musical sounds heard in the Kallady lagoon in the full moon day.

The beaches are sandy and situated along a 4 km shoreline in the city and further expanding through the neighboring places. Kallady beach, the popular serene beachfront where multitude numbers of people gather in the city. Also close to the Batticaloa proximity are the amazing beaches of Pasikudah and Kalkudak which are very well known amongst tourists and locals alike.


Pasikudah is the perfect ideal place for those who wish to learn swimming.
