Even though it's highly uncertain it will reclaim its 19th-century moniker 'the garden city of the East', Colombo has nonetheless still become a must-see spot in Sri Lanka. It is not just another sprawling busy city you have to endure on your way to the visit the beaches; it has turned into a worthy tourist destination within its own right and makes an excellent beginning– or conclusion– to your Sri Lankan travels.

The legacies of colonial Colombo's garden roots are still very much visible along its often-shady boulevards. Fort is an enthralling place thanks due to continuing restoration of its landmark colonial architecture, while Pettah brims with markets and rampant commerce. Even traffic-clogged Galle road is getting spiffier with glossy new hotel buildings lined up alongside the roads.

Colombo’s cosmopolitan side is bustling with ever-more stylish eateries, galleries, and shops. Surprises are afoot; with a little bit of exploring you'll find amazing local food,  shops with character, and tiny, cozy cafes. Meanwhile, the concrete jungle of the city is transforming the city's skyline.

Finally, there is the Galle Face Green which is located within the heart of the city and is a five-hectare ocean-side urban park stretching half a kilometer along the beach coast. It is a marvelous place to view the setting of the sun over the sandy beach of Sri Lanka.
