One of the coldest, windiest, and most breathtaking sceneries, Horton Plains is situated in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. It was discovered in the 19^th century by planter Thomas Farr and was designated as Horton Plains in 1834 to honor the then Governor of Ceylon, Sir Wilmot Horton. It was subsequently declared a natural reserve and was later changed to a National Park. The Horton Plains are the source of the 3 major rivers, Mahaweli, Kelani, and Walawe.

Horton Plains is eye-catching, the picturesque highland is popular with walkers houses the famous World’s End. If you are ever traveling from the central highlands to the coast then the path through the National Park is an extraordinary place to follow. It is home to a wide variety of wildlife including the Sambar Deer, the strip necked mongoose, long-tailed giant squirrel, wild boar, monkeys, otters, and exotic birds. A century ago, elephants could be found in these plains, however, due to British colonization, the elephants were, unfortunately, all hunted down to extinction. The best time to visit Horton Plains is during the months of November to March.
