The historical towns of Tissamaharama or “Tissa” for short and Kataragama are situated in Sri Lanka's southeast. Tissa is comprised of lotus filled lakes, beautiful green paddy fields, and enormous temples which date back to the 2nd century BC.  The rural shrine of Kataragama, which takes about approximately an hour away from Tissa, has sacred and historical importance and brings together multiple faiths to worship within this holy place. On the way to Tissa and Kataragama from the southern highlands, you pass through the Buttala foothills, known for its savanna-like lush plains, and hosts an impressive National Parks in the country, including Uda Walawe.

One of the events to look forward in the year is without a shadow of a doubt Kataragama’s two-week Perehara (cultural pageant) which happens during late July or early August. This colorful festival is held in honor of Skandha, the warrior God of Kataragama. The Perehara portrays the Hindu folklore, music, and dance techniques, as well as walking on fire considered as sacrifice and devotion to God Kataragama.
