The majestic Sinharaja (a.k.a Lion Kingdom) rainforest and the village of Kitulgala, which is known for its white water rafting, are located in the western foothills, sandwiched between the west coast and the central highlands. This is an area of beautiful hills, exotic rain forests, and lush rivers. The Sinharaja tropical rainforest is also known as a hotspot for birdlife. Ratnapura is en route to Sinharaja and is houses an ancient gem industry. The lazy riverside village of Kitulgala owes its popularity to the Kelani River which offers Grade 3 and 4 rapids for white water rafting.

The importance of the Sinharaja tropical rainforest was realized in the year1989 when UNESCO proclaimed it as a protected World Heritage Site. The Sinharaja sits in the Sabaragamuwa province and is of huge archeological significance with the finding of the Stone Age settlements in Balangoda. The excavated artifacts are on display in the National Museums of Ratnapura and Colombo. The famous Adam’s Peak is also located here which is considered a sacred place of worship of various faiths. Sri Pada has long been speculated to be one of three sacred locations on the island that was visited by Lord Buddha. Every year, thousands of pilgrims and a steady trickle of tourists climb to the summit of this holy mountain from December to April.
