Although the term digital signal processor may be foreign to you, there's a good chance you've benefitted from it on your mobile phone. These processors are known as a "complete computer in a single chip," due to phones being able to fully charge within five minutes or launch AR for games such as Pokemon Go.

However, the chip's extensive range of possibilities, mean it's exploitation and abuse from hackers, researchers at Check Point warn a cybersecurity firm. In a recent Defcon presentation, researcher Slava Makkaveev is expected to demonstrate how these processors are essentially gateways for attackers to get control over Android devices.

Makkaveev found almost 400 vulnerabilities while looking over at the Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, which is in more than 40 percent of Android devices. Potential hackers could possibly manufacture a malicious app that can hack these loopholes and bypass the usual security checkpoints and steal user information.

Additionally, the vulnerabilities may even allow a malicious app to tap calls, record it, and turn on a device's microphone without prior knowledge of the user.

Check Point's researchers said they wouldn't be specifying the technical details of the hundreds of vulnerabilities discovered, because the flaws still pose a security risk for potentially millions of devices.

Qualcomm acknowledged the possible flaws which may pose a security threat and released warnings about the vulnerabilities.

Check Point's head of cyber research, Yaniv Balmas, said he suspects these processors have more numerous vulnerabilities that have yet to be found, and he hopes future researchers will extensively scrutinize the hardware.
