Facebook will donate $3 million to partners in Afghanistan and around the world to help refugees and other humanitarian needs. The pledge, according to the company, will help refugee registration and resettlement, as well as the protection and evacuation of at-risk individuals and humanitarian aid, such as food, housing, and health care.
One of the organizations getting the cash is the International Rescue Committee, which claims that more than 18 million people in Afghanistan require humanitarian assistance, and that over 500,000 Afghans will abandon the country by the end of the year.
“Protecting people in Afghanistan from harm is so important—and so challenging—during this crisis,” Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg wrote in a post on Tuesday. "I am awestruck by the resilience and courage of the Afghan women who protested in Kabul and Herat, demanding equal rights.”
“Our thoughts remain with the Afghan community, including our Afghan colleagues and others with close ties to the country,” she continued. "Thank you to everyone who raised awareness on these issues and generously donated to support the people of Afghanistan during this crisis.”
